U.P. Storms are most likely to occur between May and October

  • According to the National Weather Service: Lightening strikes the U.S. about 25 Million times each year

  • July is the peak month for lightening strikes across the U.S.

  • Late afternoon is the peak time for lightening strikes to occur

  •  Fog, Hail, Tornado and Wind can be direct results of severe weather

In the U.P. most of our lightening activity happens across the central and eastern regions near Lake Breezes in Eagle Harbor

In 2018 the Weather Forecast Office (WFO) Marquette issued:

65 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings

2 Tornado Warnings

Most significant storm event in 2018:

June 30th : A supercell thunderstorm traveled across Lake Superior and slammed into the shoreline at the Muskallonge Lake State Park. Rangers at the park reported tennis ball to softball size hail. All 159 campsites at the park sustained hail damage. In addition, campers, cars, other property, 7 park vehicles and roofs on several park buildings sustained significant damage.
